Modica Bassa is the commercial and tourist heart of the city. Corso Umberto I, the two main cathedrals, the museums, the chocolate shops, the restaurants: everything is here. Staying in the lower city means leaving your accommodation and having everything readily available. It's the most convenient choice for those who want to get around on foot and make little use of the car during their stay.

Accommodations in the lower city — B&Bs and holiday homes — are often found in historic 18th-century buildings, with high ceilings, terracotta floors, and balconies overlooking the Corso or side alleys. They are the most sought-after and the most expensive, especially during high season. Noise: the Corso is lively until late in the evening, especially in summer.

Modica Alta is quieter, more authentic, and less frequented by tourists. Accommodation options here are fewer but often more characteristic — cave dwellings, restored medieval homes, terraces with extraordinary views of the lower city. The downside: getting around requires fit legs or a car. It's not suitable for those with mobility issues.
