What Almost All Tourists Do Wrong
Not going up to Modica Alta. Ninety percent of visitors stay on Corso Umberto I and take a photo of San Giorgio from the square. Modica Alta — the medieval alleys, the Castle, the viewpoints, the almost abandoned Cartellone district — is the most beautiful and least seen part.
Arriving at churches at midday. Everything closes from 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM. Visits are best made in the morning or late afternoon.
Wearing the wrong shoes. Uneven cobblestones, steep slopes, staircases with three hundred steps. High heels or flip-flops are dangerous and uncomfortable. Comfortable shoes with non-slip soles are mandatory.
Eating only on the main street. Some restaurants on the Corso cater to tourists with mediocre quality and inflated prices. The best places are in the side alleys. Ask your B&B — it's the difference between a good lunch and a memorable one.
Skipping the Sicilian breakfast. Cappuccino and croissant like in any Italian cafe. Granita with brioche — a ritual that doesn't exist anywhere else — should be experienced at least one morning.
Not booking San Nicolò Inferiore. The rupestrian church with Byzantine frescoes requires mandatory booking. Contact the Pro Loco of Modica or the Municipality. If you don't book, you won't get in.
